Principles of Hydrologic Modelling UW Graduate Course and Professional Short Course

This course addresses the development of computational models of watershed hydrology in support of water resources management and scientific investigation. The full model development and application cycle is considered: pre-processing, understanding, and generating input forcing data; system discretization and algorithms for simulating hydrologic processes; parameter estimation; and interpreting model output in the context of often significant system uncertainty. The course will include practical applications of models to alpine, boreal forest, prairie, and agricultural settings in Canada.

Webinar - Hydrology of Prairie Wetlands: Scientific Foundation for Management and Conservation

Abstract:   Prairie landscape is dotted by wetlands called sloughs in Canada and potholes in the USA. These wetlands control many aspects of hydrology and have important ecological functions. Hydrological understanding of the wetlands has far reaching implications for protection, restoration, and management of the prairie environments. I will present a unique case study, where long-term monitoring and focused experiments over the past 50 years have generated a body of fundamental scientific knowledge that is beginning to guide policy development for protection and restoration of prairie wetlands. The key findings are: 1) long-term monitoring of basic hydrological and ecological variables is necessary to assess the response of wetlands to natural and anthropogenic stresses; 2) effective management of wetlands requires the consideration of wetland complexes, as opposed to individual wetlands, and the hydrological linkage between wetlands and surrounding uplands; and 3) biodiversity of prairie wetlands depends on the diversity in water regimes (e.g. ephemeral, seasonal, permanent) within a wetland complex, in other words, hydro-diversity

A Raven hydrologic modelling workshop, co-sponsored by the CWRA, CSHS, and Carleton University Geography department, was held in Ottawa this October 14th at Carleton University, and instructed by Prof. James Craig from the University of Waterloo. Eleven  attendees from academia, government, and consulting participated. The day started with an discussion of the challenges to trustworthy model development, covered the basics of modelling with the flexible Raven hydrologic modelling framework, and ended with hands-on watershed model development exercises. Plenty of interesting questions were asked and participants enjoyed the stimulating discussions both at the breaks and during post-workshop drinks at the Carleton student centre. Plans are underway to offer the Raven workshop at the CWRA conference in Lethbridge in June 2017. CSHS, in association with CWRA, is proud to present work by Dr. Jeffrey McKenzie, McGill University. This webinar will showcase his research on the effects of climate change in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range in Peru. An estimated 400 million people rely on meltwater from these, and other glaciers, around the world. Results from recent studies will be presented that identify the flux and storage mechanisms that control water resources with particular focus on low-gradient alpine meadows.

The Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences (CSHS) is currently exploring if there is interest among the hydrological and water resources community for professional hydrology certification in Canada. Several jurisdictions outside of Canada have already established a professional certification for hydrologists. One example is the American Institute of Hydrology (http://www.aihydrology.org/hydro-certification.html). 

 The results of this anonymous survey will be presented and discussed at the CSHS Annual General Meeting at the upcoming 2016 Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) Conference in Montreal on May 25. Results will also be posted to the CSHS website.

Water: An Ethical Opportunity for Canada

The discussion will proceed both historically, in reference to the explicitly ethical claims that aligned water management with the state; and politically, in reference to how ethical challenges to state-led water management from indigenous and environmental communities have shaped recent developments in Canada.

The Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences (CSHS) Executive is encouraging all CSHS members to attend the CSHS AGM being held over lunch on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the CWRA National Conference in Winnipeg. On October 6 – 7, 2011 the Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences (CSHS) hosted a 2 day workshop on operational river flow and water supply forecasting. The workshop was intended to promote and facilitate communication, heighten awareness of the breadth of forecasting methods, illuminate their effects on forecast performance, and explore the operational practicability of the technologies. From March 2 – 11, 2010 at the University of Calgary’s Biogeoscience Institute’s Barrier Lake Station in the Kananaskis Valley, the Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan offered an intensive short course version of Geography 827, Principles of Hydrology. Subjects such as precipitation, interception, snow accumulation, snowmelt, evapotranspiration, infiltration, groundwater, streamflow, and river hydraulics were taught by a selection of the best hydrologists in Canada. These processes were framed within the context of distinctly Canadian landscape features such as glaciers, peatlands and seasonally frozen ground. State of the art statistical methodologies were presented. Students were exposed to an overview of each subject, and introduced to recent scientific findings and new cutting edge theories, tools and techniques. Click

The Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences (CSHS) sees its niche among Canada’s water associations as being the primary facilitator for the conveyance of state of the art hydrological science and information to the practicing hydrology community. We, i.e. the CSHS executive, have been busy the last few years, and we would like to thank all members for their support. After a very successful conference in Québec City in June 2009, we thought it would be good to take this opportunity to inform the membership of some of the products and activities they have supported.
