Webinar Title: How to Survive a Tsunami – Applications of Agent-Based Models
Presenter: Joseph Kim
Abstract: Recent events such as the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami and the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami demonstrated the destructive nature of tsunamis to human lives and infrastructure. The Pacific region of Canada is exposed to tsunami hazards with an estimated cumulative probability of occurrence of 40-80% in 50 years for a potentially damaging level of run-up, signifying the pressing need for informed tsunami emergency preparedness. This presentation will investigate human responses observed during historical tsunami events and draw practical lessons learned to increase an individual’s likelihood of surviving a tsunami. The application of agent-based models to assess a community’s tsunami evacuation preparedness and build more resilient infrastructure is introduced through a case study for Tofino, BC, Canada. The advantages of using agent-based models over traditional GIS methods when assessing evacuation potential will also be discussed.
