Title: From Fragility to Flexibility: The imperative for adaptive flood management approaches in Canada

When: April 26th @ 1 pm ET

Language: EN & FR – This webinar will be translated simultaneously as it is presented

About:

EN: Canadians across the country that are exposed to flood risks have embedded uncertainty – and this is before taking climate change into account. Flood specialists are tasked with proposing mitigation actions that reduce risk today and in the future – What if climate change is more rapid than anticipated? What if government disaster support programs change? What if development pressures in the floodplain are more or less than we are planning for? Given the deep uncertainty, it is crucial that we invest in mitigation activities that are robust and will work across many different possible futures. In this webinar, we will explain what an adaptive management framework is, exploring the rationale for a shift from traditional, arguably fragile mitigation activities to actions and processes that are flexible. We will also explore flood mapping concepts that support adaptive flood management.
