About: The presentation outlines the basic concepts that distinguish simulation and optimization models used in river basin management studies, and explains several recent innovations related to the use of WEB.BM optimization model both in planning and real-time operation. The ideas are demonstrated in recent studies in India, showing (a) improvement in reservoir operating rules that were derived from optimization results; and, (b) quantification of computer-derived reservoir releases during floods that rely on the use of short-term runoff forecasts available from the river forecasting authorities. The concepts are universally applicable to any river basin for which sufficient data are available.
