The Federal Floodplain Mapping Guidelines workshop, hosted by CWRA on behalf of the Government of Canada, has been arranged in order to present and gather input regarding the recently developed Federal Floodplain Mapping Guidelines Series documents. The workshop aims to identify gaps in the published documents, as well as further opportunities for research going forward. Overall, it is intended to provide a forum for diverse members of the flood management community to collaborate toward the common goal of mitigating Canada’s costliest natural disaster: overland flooding.

Keynote speaker Bob Sandford will open the workshop. Aside from having authored and co-authored a number of high-profile works on water, Mr. Sandford is currently the EPCOR Water Security Research Chair at the United Nations University. He will be followed by speakers from Natural Resources and Public Safety Canada, who will provide brief overviews of the documents contained in Version 1.0 of the Federal Floodplain Mapping Guidelines Series and discuss plans for future development. The afternoon sessions will then provide an opportunity for all participants to contribute to ongoing work by addressing three specific topics of relevance: climate change impacts on floodplain mapping, strategies for stakeholder outreach and gaps in existing Guidelines documents.
