Panel Speakers

Debora L. VanNijnatten is Professor in the Department of Political Science and North American Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University and Faculty Member at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. Her research and publications have focused on how we can better govern and manage our shared surface and groundwater sources in North America. Her current funded research focuses on the design and application of governance indicators for adaptive management in transboundary water basins as well as governance approaches that can cope with deep uncertainties and water scarcity in an era of accelerating climate change. She is a member of the US-Mexico Binational Waters – Permanent Forum and is working with the Binational Groundwater Task Force to characterize and manage aquifers along the border. She is the author/editor of five books and more than 50 journal articles and book chapters.

Joanna Eyquem is Managing Director of Climate-Resilient Infrastructure, and is also responsible for the Intact Centre’s activities in Quebec. Joanna is bilingual (English and French) and her focus areas include: (1) mobilizing flood-resilience for homes, new and existing communities, and commercial real estate; (2) promoting retention of natural infrastructure to mitigate flood risk, (3) promoting programs to limit wildfire risk; (4) developing programs to limit risk of extreme heat; and (5) incorporating climate risk into institutional investing, credit rating assessments and securities disclosure.

Joanna has 20 years of professional experience in environmental consultancy in Canada and the UK, combining technical expertise in climate adaptation, natural hazard management, hydrogeomorphology and freshwater habitat rehabilitation. Prior to joining the Intact Centre, she was Climate Change Practice Lead at AECOM and previously held roles at Parish Geomorphic Ltd (now Matrix Solutions), Royal Haskoning DHV and Jacobs Engineering. Joanna holds an MSc in Environmental Technology (Water Option) from Imperial College London and a BSc in Geography (Earth Sciences) from the University of Exeter, UK. Joanna is a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (CWEM) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv.) She has been based in Montreal since 2009 and represents the Intact Centre on the InterSectoriel Flood Network of Quebec (RIISQ).

William (Bill) K. Annable is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is affiliated with Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Association of Professional Geoscientist of Ontario, the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, and the International Association of Hydrogeologists.

He has been researching the hydraulic, sediment transport and morphological characteristics of rivers for over the past 18 years. In addition, he has been designing, monitoring and supervising the construction of natural channel restoration projects throughout North America – totalling over 2,500km of streams and rivers studied and over 180km of restored river channels.

Professor Annable’s recent research has focused on the sediment transport characteristics of urban river systems and how changes in hydrology affect habitat dynamics. He is specifically interested in river restoration, rehabilitation and aquatic habitat improvements. The study of basin scale isotope hydrology and sediment transport of non-point source contaminants, along with conducting numerical and field studies of groundwater surface water interaction and karst hydrology are other interests of his as well. Additionally, Professor Annable conducts field and numerical modelling studies on urban river mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology.

His current sources of research funding are from NSERC, CFI, EPA, Water Districts, Municipalities, and DFO.
