Indigenous engagement is critical for any activity or policy that may impact Indigenous Peoples. In our work in the Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program (FHIMP) at Natural Resources Canada, having a reciprocal relationship between the Crown and Indigenous peoples is valued. In addition to sharing information about our data sets and flood hazard mapping, we also desire to create a space where we can incorporate Indigenous Traditional and Ecological Knowledge into our flood-mapping science. Through effective two-way communication, we can increase flood risk awareness and work to adjust the scopes of projects to be more inclusive and effective for communities.

In this presentation, Jocelynn will give a brief introduction to Indigenous engagement, show ways that the FHIMP team is contributing to flood mapping work through our engagement work, and share broader lessons learned when planning Indigenous engagement. The goal of this presentation is to increase awareness of what engagement looks like in practice and look at different ways that you can reflect Indigenous engagement best practices into your work.
