May 5-8, 2025: ON Branch: Culvert Design Course (Virtual Delivery)
When: May 5, 2025 – May 8, 2025 9 am to 4 pm EST
Where: Virtual
Description:
The focus of the course is to provide participants with an in-depth, hands-on understanding of how to hydraulically size and design a culvert.
The online course covers a range of design topics, including allowable headwater at the inlet, permissible outlet velocity, energy dissipation measures, aquatic organism passage, mechanisms of culvert failures, and repair and rehabilitation options.
The course topics include culvert design principles and procedures and debris control structures.
Throughout the online course, participants engage in a number of workshops where problems are completed, both long-hand and with a computer using the free public FHWA HY-8 Culvert Hydraulic Analysis and Design Program.
Additionally, a video demonstration of a portable hydraulic flume is set up for the participants to observe hydraulic principles associated with various culvert configurations, aquatic organism passage features, and culvert linings.
The course instructors are provided by the National Highway Institute (NHI), in affiliation with the Federal Highway Administration, USA.
