The 2020 Southern Manitoba Summer Flood Events

Presented by:
Fisaha Unduche and Chris Propp, Manitoba Infrastructure

About this presentation:
In June of 2020 a series of weather systems brought significant precipitation to southern Manitoba with some areas receiving record-high precipitation of more than 200 millimeters during a three day period. The Rat River watershed in the southeast and The Little Saskatchewan River watershed was one of the hardest hit areas with extensive overland flooding and record high flows. The severe precipitation resulted in several municipalities declaring States of Local Emergency due to flooding of properties and homes, sewer back up, and local and provincial road washouts. One major concern among the many issues caused by the summer flood event was the structural integrity of the network of dam structures along the Little Saskatchewan River.

Fisaha Unduche and Chris Propp from Manitoba Infrastructure will provide an overview of the hydrology that precipitated the summer flood events (pun intended), the response coordinated by provincial and municipal authorities, and the impacts of the events.
