Nov 19, 2024: Design Storm Training Session (Virtual)
What: Design Storm Training Session
When: November 19, 2024 @ 8:30 am to 4:30 pm ET
Where: Virtual
About:
Precipitation either in the form of snowmelt or rainfall is the most important component of any hydrologic computer simulation model. It is more important than soil parameters, hydrograph shape parameters, routing parameters and storage parameters. Precipitation drives the results of any hydrologic computer simulation. Although precipitation is the most important parameter, there are many misconceptions on the application of design storms. This training session will identify those misconceptions and provide guidelines for the application of design storms.
The following is the agenda for the virtual training session:
1. Design Storm Introduction (8-30 am to 9 am)
2. Information Requirements (9 am to 9-15 am)
3. Precipitation (9-15 am to 10 am)
4. Basic Hydrologic Modelling (10 am to 11 am)
5. Current Design Storms (11 am to 12 pm, 12-30 pm to 2 pm)
6. Design Storm Selection and Application (2-15 pm to 4-30 pm).
Speaker(s):
The Design Storm training session will be led by Mr. Chris Doherty. Chris has over 46 years of varied water resources experience in the province of Ontario and across Canada. Chris was the principal author of Working Paper C Rainfall Analyses of the 1985 Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Technical Guidelines for Flood Plain Management in Ontario. The Working Paper examined several design storms that considered return period rainfall, PMP rainfall and snowmelt plus rainfall. Mr. Doherty’s studies also included (i) a review of areal reduction factors for the CVC; and (ii) the impact of climate change on PMP values for CNSC.
