Event Description:
The Canada Water Agency — A New Leader and Convener for Freshwater in Canada
Canada’s freshwater is under increasing threat from unprecedented and accelerating climate change. Additional factors including population growth, industrial development, agricultural production and natural resource extraction also contribute to Canada’s freshwater challenges.
Freshwater management in a country as vast as Canada is complex. Over 20 federal departments and agencies have freshwater activities. Additionally, fresh water is a shared responsibility between federal, provincial, territorial, and Indigenous governments. Challenges vary by region and addressing them can involve multiple jurisdictions.
Hence, in June 2023, the Government of Canada established the Canada Water Agency within Environment and Climate Change Canada. The Agency’s mandate is to improve freshwater management in Canada by providing leadership; facilitating federal collaboration; and improved coordination and collaboration with provinces, territories, and Indigenous Peoples to address national and regional transboundary freshwater challenges and opportunities.
The Agency will also deliver major components of Canada’s strengthened Freshwater Action Plan. The Plan includes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiatives to restore, protect, and manage 8 waterbodies of national significance including Lake Winnipeg.
