March 29-April 1, 2021: Ontario 2D HEC-RAS Training Course
In 2021 the Ontario branch of the CWRA will be hosting online 1D and 2D HEC-RAS training courses:
A link to access each course will be sent to all registrants shortly after the registration deadline.
Please note that space is limited and registration will be on a first come basis. Should registration be filled a list of interested individuals and organizations may be created for a second training session to be determined.
1D HEC-RAS Training Course:
Course Dates: March 1-5, 2021
Course Times: Half days, from 8AM – 1PM ET
Registration ends on February 12, 2021
Basic HEC-RAS Course Description
This intensive, hands-on, training and computer workshop will prepare the engineer and water resource professional to use the HEC-RAS computer program in real world situations. Led by experts with experience in hydraulic modeling, participants learn how to conduct water surface profiles, bridge hydraulics, and flood plain information studies using the 1-dimensional steady flow capabilities of HEC-RAS.
The HEC-RAS modeling system was developed as part of the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s Next Generation software and replaces several existing Corps of Engineers programs, including the HEC-2 water surface profile program. HEC-RAS incorporates various aspects of hydraulic modeling, including water surface profile computations and bridge hydraulics.
Seminar Benefits
- Learn how to use the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS (River Analysis System) computer program
- Gain hands-on HEC-RAS experience by participating in practical computer workshops
- Get an overview of hydraulic principles for rivers, waterway bridges, and culverts
- Optimize the effectiveness of your next flood control or drainage projects
- Obtain valuable insights in model development and floodway optimization for FEMA flood insurance studies
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the basic modeling principles for developing steady state hydraulic models.
- Identify the three main components of a steady flow HEC-RAS model.
- Understand the theoretical basis of HEC-RAS model.
- Develop steady state HEC-RAS models for analyzing confluences and bridge/culvert structures.
2D HEC-RAS Training Course
Course Dates: March 29 – April 1, 2021
Course Times: Half days, from 10AM – 3PM ET
Registration deadline ends on March 19, 2021
HEC-RAS2D Course Description
This intensive, workshop-oriented, training will prepare the engineer and water resource professional to use the HEC-RAS computer program for modeling two-dimensional (2D) unsteady flow applications. Led by experts from WEST Consultants with practical experience in hydraulic modeling, participants will learn how to approach and construct a 2D model for unsteady flow conditions, and to effectively view and analyze results.
The seminar includes lectures on 2D flow theory, an introduction to the new capabilities and features of HEC-RAS, and procedures for creating a stable and calibrated 2D model. Workshops focus on giving students hands on experience with building and pre-processing the computational mesh, performing offline and inline 2D projects, and using the built-in feature RAS Mapper to spatially analyze results.
The HEC-RAS modeling system was developed as part of the Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center Next Generation software and replaces several existing programs including HEC-2, UNET, and HEC-6. HEC-RAS incorporates various aspects of 2D hydraulic modeling, including flow and water surface profile and computations within storage areas, and the interaction between 1D and 2D systems.
Seminar Benefits/Learning Outcomes
- Learn how to use the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS (River Analysis System) computer program to model two-dimensional unsteady flow hydraulics.
- Get an overview of two-dimensional flow theory and the differences between one-dimensional modeling.
- Gain hands-on HEC-RAS experience by participating in practical computer workshops.
- Understand how to develop a stable and calibrated two-dimensional flow model.
- Obtain valuable insights in methods for minimizing computation errors and instabilities for two-dimensional unsteady hydraulic models.
- Learn from real world projects and applications.
Please note that experience or training with 1-dimensional unsteady flow in HEC-RAS is recommended prior to attending the RAS2D training.
