Topic: Smart Blue Roofs in Action: Advancing Urban Stormwater Management in
the Credit Valley Conservation Watershed

Speaker: Phil James, P.Eng., Credit Valley Conservation Authority

Description :

In May 2024, Credit Valley Conservation commissioned Canada’s first CSA B805-18 compliant Smart Blue Roof designed using an integrated water management approach. The system integrates advanced technologies to manage stormwater at the source, reduce urban flooding, and enable safe rainwater reuse for offsetting potable water supplies. The presentation will highlight key system components, including automated modulating control valves, real-time sensors, programable logic controller, a seamless PMMA roof membrane, and an electric field leak detection system among others. The system captures and stores rainfall on a flat roof, with built-in treatment processes including filtration, UV disinfection, and chlorination to ensure water safety for non-potable reuse. The Smart Blue Roof demonstrates how intelligent infrastructure can advance ‘One Water’ principles, enhance climate resilience, energy efficiency, and sustainability in dense urban environments.
