Title of Presentation: Global Water Futures – Outcomes for Saskatchewan

Description:

The Global Water Futures programme (GWF) has been headquartered at the Global Institute for Water Security, University of Saskatchewan, since 2016 and has become the most published and largest freshwater research programme in the world.  GWF’s 65 projects and core teams have produced a number of outcomes of significance, including development of Canada’s national water model, enhanced national-scale water prediction, and production of a suite of next generation hydrological models; co-development of science and solutions with Indigenous partners; identification of risks from climate change and prediction of water futures across Canadian river basins; demonstration of transdisciplinary approaches and overcoming siloed and fragmented approaches to science; contributions to realization of the Canada Water Agency and the National Freshwater Action Plan, and significant influence on provincial water policy and practice; and training of over 2000 highly qualified personnel and the next generation of water scientists.   GWF has a follow-on project, the Global Water Futures Observatories which is Canada’s premier national freshwater research facility with observation sites and laboratories in Saskatchewan and across Canada. There are also important contributions to Saskatchewan’s water security from investigation of groundwater age, health impacts and vulnerability to contamination, Indigenous community health and water management, water management for agricultural productivity, wetland water quantity and quality management, northern forest water management, water for irrigation, and climate change impacts on future water availability in the Saskatchewan River Basin.  These outcomes will inform a presentation highlighting useful outcomes from GWF for Saskatchewan and prairie water management.
