Frequently Asked Questions
I’m not getting the CWRA newsletter/my Branch emails.
If you’ve recently joined, you might not have been added to the national mailing list yet. We update our members mailing lists quarterly, and we only send emails to members who consent to communications. You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time. If you want to start receiving national emails immediately, you can sign up for our newsletter here. If you’d like to receive emails from your branch or affiliate, please check their websites for their contact information and ask- several of our branches and affiliates have newsletter signups as well.
If you’ve been a member for a while and haven’t gotten the emails, please log into your member account and check to see that you have granted us communication consent. If you have, please email us at info@cwra.org.
How can I renew my membership after I got a notice of cancellation?
The fastest way to renew an expired membership is to sign up for a ‘new’ membership using the same email as your previous membership. Our database will reactivate your existing profile, and you should be able to sign in again immediately with your previous login information.
I can’t sign into my member account!?
Please email us at info@cwra.org with a description of the error (forgot your password? don’t have a login email?) and a screenshot if possible.
Where is my receipt?
You can access your billing records by logging into your member site and opening your member profile online.
Does the event fee/membership rate include taxes?
No- because of our corporate status, CWRA does not collect taxes on any event registrations or memberships.
I got an invoice but I do not want to renew my membership. What should I do?
Membership invoices are automatically written off after 30 days, with no penalties to you. You can just ignore the emails if you are not planning on renewing. We are sorry to see you go, and hope to see you rejoin in the future once you would like to. If you have any feedback for us, please email info@cwra.org.
I am a student, but I still see a membership fee on my account/a charge to join. How do I get a free student membership?
Because of the way our membership system billing works, we need to continue to list a cost for the membership. Please do not pay this amount! Please use the code ‘CWRAStudent’ to get the correct cost (free). You do not need to enter any credit card information to complete this transaction. This code will be live starting January 1, 2023.
Regular
Regular members are those who have been out of school for at least three years. This membership type makes up over 50% of our membership. Add CSHS ($10/year) and/or CANCID ($50/year) membership to your regular membership. Regular membership rate is $120 per year.
Retired
An individual is eligible for retired status if they have been a member of CWRA for at least the last five years and has now retired from their regular employment. Add CSHS ($5/year) and/or CANCID ($25/year) membership to your regular membership. Retired membership rate is $60 per year.
Young Professional
An individual is eligible for Young Professional status for up to three years after graduation from a recognized post secondary institution. Add CSHS ($5/year) and/or CANCID ($25/year) membership to your regular membership. Young Professional membership rate is $60 per year.
Student
Student sign-up is now a two-step process: students will need to register through the website here, as well as email info@cwra.org with proof of student status. You do not need to wait for a confirmation from National of your status before you use your account. Please see the registration page linked below for more information.
In June 2022, the CWRA Board of Directors voted to implement a free student membership category to begin January 1, 2023.
If students do not wish to take advantage of this membership category, they may register as a regular member and pay the associated fees. In that case they would be registered and receive the benefits of a regular member in CWRA.
For the purposes of deciding who is eligible to be a student member, students are defined as anyone enrolled part-time in a hydrological engineering, science, or hydrology-related post-secondary program or in full-time post-secondary studies in any discipline. CWRA will also allow the student member status for anyone applying for it within three months of completing one of these programs.
People who are working and taking supplementary courses for professional development do not qualify as students.
Student Member Entitlements
Free student membership includes access to all the same benefits as regular members, with the following exceptions:
- Student members cannot hold president, vice-president, secretary or treasurer positions within the branch or national-level board. Student members can, however, hold elected positions of branch and national-level member-at-large directors and SYP reps, and executive positions within the Student and Young Professional (SYP) affiliate or with SYP Chapters.
Student members do not have access to the following services:
- Free membership in CWRA affiliates that charge additional fees (e.g., CANCID, NASH) unless offered by the affiliate. As of January 1, 2023, CSHS and NASH student memberships will be available for no charge.
As with membership categories requiring membership fees, student status is renewable annually.
