Although there are sometimes clues that can help trace the sources of fecal contamination in water, it is generally difficult to determine them with certainty. In collaboration with MELCCFP, a procedure has been developed at IRDA to target the origin of this fecal contamination using Bacteroidetes genetic markers. This webinar will present the different stages of the project, ranging from the development of the sampling method to the analysis of water samples and the interpretation of results. The method has been validated not only in terms of the specificity and sensitivity of the selected Bacteroidetes markers, but also in terms of its ease of interpretation, applicability, and effectiveness in the field.

Développer une procédure et des outils pour la détermination des sources de contamination fécale de l’eau à l’aide de marqueurs génétiques

Bien qu’il existe des indices qui permettent parfois de retracer les sources de contamination fécale de l’eau, il est généralement difficile de la déterminer avec certitude. Avec la collaboration du MELCCFP, une procédure a été développée à l’IRDA afin de cibler l’origine de cette contamination fécale à l’aide de marqueurs génétiques Bacteroidetes. Ce webinaire présentera les différentes étapes du projet, allant du développement de la méthode d’échantillonnage à l’analyse des échantillons d’eau et l’interprétation des résultats. La méthode a été validée non seulement en termes de spécificité et de sensibilité des marqueurs Bacteroidetes sélectionnés, mais aussi en fonction de sa facilité d’interprétation, de son applicabilité et de son efficacité sur le terrain.

Speaker Bio:

Élodie Larouche holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in veterinary sciences. She has been a research professional at IRDA since 2019 in agricultural environmental hygiene within Caroline Côté’s team. Over time, Élodie has notably worked on antimicrobial resistance genes and Bacteroidetes markers. She contributes to research work for the implementation and development of methods in microbiology and molecular biology.

Élodie Larouche détient un baccalauréat en biologie et une maîtrise en sciences vétérinaires. Elle est professionnelle de recherche à l’IRDA depuis 2019 en hygiène de l’environnement agricole dans l’équipe de Caroline Côté. Au fil du temps, Élodie a notamment travaillé sur les gènes de résistance aux antimicrobiens et les marqueurs Bacteroidetes. Elle contribue aux travaux de recherche pour la réalisation et le développement des méthodes en microbiologie et biologie moléculaire.
