The International Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) was established as a not-for-profit organization in New Delhi, India, in 1950 by founding members Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Serbia (former Yugoslavia), Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand and Turkey to encourage the global development of science and techniques around irrigated agriculture.
Membership of ICID is first and foremost organized through national committees such as CANCID, that include a variety of professionals who represent their country in matters related to irrigation, drainage or agricultural water management. Companies, institutions, and individuals with interests within the scope of ICID can also be direct members of the organization. Currently, the ICID membership networks covers 90% of the irrigated area of the world spread out over 78 countries. ICID is affiliated with other international organizations such as UN Water, FAO, UNESCO, IWMI, the World Bank.
