Dec 14th, 2022 @ 12 pm CT – MB Branch Webinar: “EOLakeWatch: Satellite Observations for Algal Bloom Monitoring” with Dr. Caren Binding
What: MB Branch Webinar on “EOLakeWatch: Satellite Observations for Algal Bloom Monitoring”
Presenter: Dr. Caren Binding – Research Scientist in Aquatic Optics and Remote Sensing, Science and Technology Branch, ECCC
When: December 14th, 2022 @ 12 pm (CT)
About: Many lakes across Canada are experiencing significant water quality pressures due to nutrient over-enrichment and recurring severe cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs), leading to widespread socio-economic and ecological impacts. Early detection and comprehensive monitoring of blooms are fundamental to their effective management and mitigation of public health risks. Earth Observation (EO) satellites have provided the means by which cHABs can be observed with unprecedented frequency and spatial coverage. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s recently launched EOLakeWatch delivers a suite of satellite-derived algal bloom products in support of lake research, monitoring and management. These products provide prompt, quantitative measures of algal bloom conditions, allowing the identification of areas of potential concern, quantifying spatio-temporal trends, advancing understanding of bloom dynamics and drivers, as well as guiding and monitoring the effectiveness of management actions. An overview of the platform and products will be provided, along with a summary of 2022 bloom conditions on three priority lakes; Lake Winnipeg, Lake Erie and Lake of the Woods.
