Alberta’s Fish Culture Program Lunch-N-Learn

Operating two brood facilities and two production facilities, Alberta’s fish culture program produces over 2 million trout annually to create, maintain and enhance fish populations to support the provinces put and take recreational fishery. The program also produces a limited number of Walleye fry for restorative stocking. Moving into the future, the program endeavors to improve the stocking program through in-depth assessment of our trout strains and water bodies and through investment into aging infrastructure and equipment to ensure that the program meets the demands of Alberta’s recreational fishery.

The presentation will include a guided tour of the hatchery.

Speaker:    Mr. Ryan Lyster Facility Supervisor (Acting) Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery

A passion for the outdoors and fishing led Ryan to obtain a diploma in Natural Resource Technology from Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta and eventually a B.Sc. in Conservation Biology from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. After a number of years in the lab industry and involvement with well site reclamation and remediation, Ryan obtained a position with the Alberta government at the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery. For the last five years, he has held the position of hatchery technician and is currently the acting facility supervisor.
