Calgary SYP is hosting this World Water Day presentation by Dr. Carl Mendoza of BGC Engineering, and professor emeritus of the U of Alberta. Dr. Mendoza will be speaking about wetlands and restoration, a hydrogeological challenge familiar to Alberta.

Talk Description:

The environmental footprint of oil sand mines is appreciable. The 50 ha Sandhill Fen Research Watershed, a reclaimed area with uplands and lowlands designed for forestland and wetland development, was constructed to demonstrate the viability of mitigating environmental impacts of soft tailings deposits, with slightly elevated sodium concentrations, in the sub humid climate of the Boreal Plain. Research objectives focus on evaluating the viability and efficacy of choices for landform construction, reclamation cover materials and placement, and vegetation communities and densities.
