Oct 22, 2025: Ottawa SYP: An Introduction to Numerical Modelling of Effluent Discharges
Time: Oct 22, 2025, 7 PM – 8 PM EDT
Speaker: Prof. Majid Mohammadian, P.Eng., University of Ottawa, Canada
Topic: An Introduction to numerical modelling of effluent discharges
Description:
Outfalls of wastewater treatment plants and other industrial units can have adverse environmental impacts. This presentation will review recent advances in outfall systems along with experimental and numerical research at the University of Ottawa on effluent discharges. It will present an introduction to the numerical modelling of outfall systems, covering the principles of numerical simulation, including governing equations, Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) modelling, and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), as well as mesh requirements for various types of simulations.
Speakers Bio:
Dr. Majid Mohammadian is a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa (Canada), working on analyzing environmental problems. He is a professional Civil Engineer (P.Eng.). He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Laval University in the field of applied mathematics and has research experience at M.I.T. with a focus on the numerical simulation of hydrodynamic systems such as shallow water flows. His area of research includes numerical simulation of water bodies and experimental and numerical modelling of outfall systems. He uses laser-induced fluorescence and particle image velocimetry for laboratory studies and OpenFOAM for numerical simulations. He is the former chair of the IAHR-IWA Joint Committee on Marine Outfall Systems and a member of the hydrotechnical council of CSCE.
