Note: Applicants will only need to submit one application to be considered for all the scholarships, for which they are eligible. For more details on eligibility criteria, please see the descriptions below.

The Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) now offers six annual scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to graduate students enrolled full-time in a Canadian university or college. It is a requirement for the applicants to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

All six scholarships are awarded through a single application process. Selection of the award recipients is based on the overall ranking of the applications.

NHC Water Excellence Scholarship – $5,000

This premier scholarship will be awarded to the highest ranked of all applicants. Funding is provided by Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC).

WSP Scholarship for Indigenous Students in Water – $2,000

Awarded to the highest ranked Indigenous applicant who has not already been awarded a higher-ranking scholarship. 

Harker/Cameron – Women in Water Scholarship – $2,000

Awarded to the highest ranked female applicant who has not already been awarded a higher-ranking scholarship. This scholarship is presented to recognize the ongoing legacy of Jennifer Harker and Valerie Cameron.

Rick Ross Student Scholarship – $2,000

Awarded to the highest ranked of all applicants who has not already been awarded a higher-ranking scholarship. This scholarship is presented to recognize the ongoing legacy of Rick Ross.

Ken Thompson Scholarship – $2,000

Awarded to the highest ranked of all applicants who has not already been awarded a higher-ranking scholarship. This scholarship is presented to honour the legacy of the late Ken Thompson.

CWRA Memorial Scholarship – $1,500

Awarded to the highest ranked of all applicants who has not already been awarded a higher-ranking scholarship. This scholarship represents a tribute to CWRA members through their colleagues’ donations.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents attending a Canadian university or college, enrolled in full-time graduate studies in any department in both fall and winter terms of the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Applicants must be graduate students whose research-based program of study focuses on applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources.
  • To be considered for the Scholarship for Indigenous Students in Water, the applicant must self-identify as an Indigenous student on the application form. Prior to the awarding of this scholarship, the successful applicant will be contacted by the CWRA to provide documentation of, or a description of, their Indigenous heritage. CWRA understands that Indigenous ancestry can be difficult to document, and if necessary, various forms of confirmation will be considered.
  • To be considered for the Harker/Cameron Women in Water Scholarship, applicants must self-identify as a woman on the application form.
  • Prior to the awarding of each of the six scholarships, successful applicants will be contacted by the CWRA and asked to provide documentation of their Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • The recipient must agree to have their name and photo(s) published in both CWRA internal and external communications (e.g., website, social media, newsletter, Water News, etc.).

Application Process

  • Access to the CWRA online application portal will open November 1, 2024. 
  • The application deadline for submission is January 31, 2025 at 11:59 PM PST
  • Applications will be completed by the student.
    • The student applicant must complete the application form via the online application portal at https://cwra.org/en/awards/scholarships/
    • Following the online submission of the application form, the applicant must prepare and submit their research project description using the template provided here (Password: Scholarships). The completed project description must be emailed directly to the CWRA Scholarship Committee as described on the template.
    • Supporting documents (transcripts and letters of reference) must be mailed or emailed directly to the CWRA Scholarship Committee by institutions or referees, as described below.
  • Applicants will be contacted seven (7) days prior to the submission deadline if their application remains incomplete at that time.
  • Applicants must obtain and arrange for delivery of the following supporting documents for a complete submission:
  1. Proof of the applicant’s full-time enrollment. This document is often obtained through the same office as transcripts. If not available, a confirmation letter on the applicant’s department letterhead is deemed acceptable.
  2. Official undergraduate education transcript (mailed or emailed directly to CWRA Scholarship Committee by the undergraduate institution).
  3. Official graduate education transcript (mailed or emailed directly to CWRA Scholarship Committee by the graduate institution).
  4. Two letters of reference from persons with a knowledge of the applicant’s research or professional experience (mailed or emailed directly to CWRA Scholarship Committee by the referee).
  5. An outline of the applicant’s research project and its relevance to sustainable water resources (500 words). The outline should include project research methods, type of data and analysis, as well as the expected outcomes. The project description should be reader-friendly to non-specialists.
  • Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts and letters of reference can either be emailed directly to the CWRA Scholarship Chair at scholarships@cwra.org or mailed directly to the following physical address. Information received via mail must be postmarked prior to the application deadline.

  • It is the student applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all application documents are uploaded to the application portal by the application deadline, and that the documentation or references from the appropriate person or institution are emailed directly to the CWRA Scholarship Chair by the application deadline or mailed to the CWRA Scholarship Chair postmarked prior to the application deadline.
  • Notification will be provided to all applicants prior to March 31, 2025. 
  • All successful applicants will be required to provide banking details for payment and their Social Insurance Number for tax form purposes.

Application Review and Award Notification

The CWRA scholarships are awarded primarily based on academic excellence as well as project relevance to water resources management and development. When applicants are equal based on these criteria, selection will be based on encouraging diverse geographic reach and a diverse technical focus. Equity and diversity will also be valued. 

A formal awards presentation will be held during the CWRA 78th Annual Conference in Penticton, BC (May 25-29, 2025). Scholarship applicants are encouraged to consider submitting an abstract for the conference. Details can be found at: conference.cwra.org.

L’Association canadienne des ressources en eau (ACRH) offre chaque année six bourses. 

Ces bourses sont attribuées à des étudiant·e·s diplômé·e·s inscrit·e·s à temps plein dans une université ou un collège canadien. Il est obligatoire que les candidats soient citoyen·ne·s canadien·ne·s ou résident·e·s permanent·e·s.

Les six bourses sont attribuées par le biais d’un seul processus de candidature. La sélection des récipiendaires se fait sur la base du classement global des candidatures.

Bourse Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) – 5 000 $
Cette bourse d’excellence est décernée à la candidature la mieux classée. Le financement est fourni chaque année par Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC).

Bourse pour les étudiants autochtones dans l’eau – 2 000 $

Attribuée à la candidature autochtone la mieux classée qui n’a pas déjà obtenu une bourse de niveau supérieur. 

Harker/Cameron – Bourse d’études Femmes en ressources hydriques – 2 000 $
Attribuée à la candidate la mieux classée qui n’a pas déjà reçu une bourse d’études supérieures. Cette bourse reconnaît l’héritage durable de Jennifer Harker et Valerie Cameron.

Bourse d’étudiant Rick Ross – 2 000 $
Attribuée à la meilleure candidature n’ayant pas déjà reçu une bourse d’études supérieures. Cette bourse reconnaît l’héritage continu de Rick Ross.

Bourse d’études Ken Thomson – 2 000 $
Attribuée à la meilleure candidature n’ayant pas déjà reçu une bourse d’études supérieures. Cette bourse est remise en hommage à la mémoire du défunt Ken Thomson.

Bourse commémorative de l’ACRH – 1 500 $
Attribuée à la meilleure candidature n’ayant pas déjà reçu une bourse d’études supérieures. Cette bourse représente un hommage aux membres de l’ACRH par les dons de leurs collègues.

Admissibilité

  • Les candidat·e·s doivent être des citoyen·ne·s canadien·ne·s ou des résident·e·s permanent·e·s inscrit·e·s dans une université ou un collège canadien, et être inscrit·e·s à des études supérieures à temps plein dans n’importe quel département pour les trimestres d’automne et d’hiver de l’année universitaire 2024-2025.
  • Les candidat·e·s doivent être des étudiant·e·s diplômé·e·s dont le programme de recherche est axé sur les aspects appliqués, naturels ou sociaux des ressources en eau.
  • Pour être pris en considération pour la bourse pour les étudiant·e·s autochtones dans le domaine de l’eau, les candidat·e·s doivent s’identifier comme personnes autochtones sur le formulaire de demande. Avant l’attribution de cette bourse, le ou la candidat·e retenu·e sera contacté·e par l’ACRH pour fournir une documentation ou une description de son héritage autochtone. L’ACRH comprend que l’ascendance autochtone peut être difficile à documenter et, si nécessaire, diverses formes de confirmation seront envisagées.
  • Pour être pris en considération pour la Bourse Harker/Cameron – Femmes en ressources hydriques, les candidates doivent s’identifier comme femmes sur le formulaire de demande.
  • Avant l’attribution de chacune des six bourses, les candidat·e·s retenu·e·s seront contactés par l’ACRH et invité·e·s à fournir des documents attestant leur citoyenneté canadienne ou leur statut de résident·e permanent·e.
  • Le récipiendaire doit accepter que son nom et sa ou ses photo∙s soient publiés dans les communications internes et externes de l’ACRH (par exemple, sur le site web, les réseaux sociaux, le bulletin d’information, ou dans le Water News, etc.).

Processus de demande

  • L’accès au portail de candidature en ligne de l’ACRH sera ouvert le 1er novembre 2024.
  • La date limite de soumission des candidatures est le 31 janvier 2025 à 23 h 59 HNP.
  • Les candidatures doivent être complétées par l’étudiant·e.
    • Le ou la candidat·e doit remplir le formulaire de candidature via le portail en ligne à l’adresse suivante : https://cwra.org/en/awards/scholarships/.
    • Après la soumission en ligne du formulaire de candidature, le ou la candidat·e doit préparer et soumettre la description de son projet de recherche en utilisant le modèle fourni à ce LIEN (mot de passe: Scholarships). La description complète du projet doit être envoyée par courriel directement au Comité des bourses de l’ACRH, comme décrit dans le modèle.
    • Les documents justificatifs (relevés de notes et lettres de référence) doivent être envoyés par courrier ou par courriel directement au Comité des bourses de l’ACRH par les institutions ou les référents, comme décrit ci-dessous.
  • Les candidat·e·s seront contactés sept (7) jours avant la date limite de soumission si leur candidature est incomplète à ce moment-là.
  • Les candidat·e·s doivent présenter les documents suivants pour soumettre une candidature considérée complète :
  1. Une preuve d’inscription à temps plein du candidat. Ce document est souvent obtenu par le même bureau que les relevés de notes. Si cela n’est pas disponible, une lettre de confirmation sur papier à en-tête du département du candidat est acceptée.
  2. Un relevé de notes officiel des études de premier cycle (envoyé par courrier ou par courriel directement au Comité des bourses de l’ACRH par l’institution de premier cycle).
  3. Un relevé de notes officiel des études supérieures (envoyé par courrier ou par courriel directement au Comité des bourses de l’ACRH par l’institution des études supérieures).
  4. Deux lettres de référence de personnes ayant une connaissance de la recherche ou du professionnalisme du ou de la candidat·e (envoyées par courrier ou par courriel directement au Comité des bourses de l’ACRH par le référent).
  5. Un résumé du projet de recherche du ou de la candidat·e et de sa pertinence pour les ressources en eau (500 mots). Le résumé doit inclure les méthodes de recherche, le type de données et d’analyses utilisés, ainsi que les résultats attendus. La description du projet doit être claire et accessible aux non-spécialistes, tout en évitant autant que possible l’utilisation de jargon.
  • Les relevés de notes officiels de premier et deuxième cycle, ainsi que les lettres de référence, peuvent être envoyés directement par courriel au président du Comité des bourses de l’ACRH à l’adresse : scholarships@cwra.org ou envoyés par courrier à l’adresse postale suivante. Évaluation des candidatures et attribution des bourses

Les bourses de l’ACRH sont principalement attribuées en fonction de l’excellence académique, ainsi que de la pertinence du projet pour la gestion et le développement des ressources en eau. Lorsque les candidat·e·s sont à égalité sur ces critères, la sélection se basera sur la promotion d’une portée géographique diversifiée et d’un focus technique varié. L’équité et la diversité seront également prises en compte.

Une cérémonie officielle de remise des prix aura lieu lors du 78e congrès annuel de l’ACRH à Penticton, en Colombie-Britannique (25-29 mai 2025). Scholarships Overview
