The presentation will provide a brief overview of government approach to water rights and water resource management in Alberta since the late 1800’s with the North-West Irrigation Act to the Water Act of 1999. It will then review 2025 and 2026 amendments to the Water Act, regulations, and policy, that rewrote elements of that approach. The presentation will explore potential impacts of the amended approach on the aquatic environment, other water users, and water management accountability.
