November 3, 2021 12:00 PT: BC Branch Webinar: The British Columbia Extreme Flood Project

In Archived BC, Archived Event, Archived Online, Archived Webinars

Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) recently completed guidelines for regional flood frequency analysis as a portion of the Province of BC’s ‘British Columbia Extreme Flood Project’.  In this webinar, we will discuss the purpose and findings of this report, focusing on how peak flow generation varies in the many different hydrologic regions of BC.  We will demonstrate use of the tools presented in the report by working through examples of design flow estimation for both gauged and ungauged sites.  The goal of the webinar is to equip practitioners with the knowledge to use the tools presented in the report and their own hydrologic knowledge to estimate design flows in their own work.

Slides for this presentation are available at this link.

Joel Trubilowicz, PhD, PEng:

Joel is an environmental data scientist with NHC. He specializes in statistics, data visualization, and computer programming for hydrology, climatology, and all forms of environmental data. Joel led the station frequency analysis and the automated gauge reporting for the BC regional flood frequency guidelines work.  He works at NHC’s Kamloops office.

Faye Hirshfield, PhD, PAg:

Faye is a hydrologist with Northwest Hydraulic Consultants. She works on a variety of water resources projects through NHC’s Nanaimo office on Vancouver Island. Faye led the regionalization and regulation project components for the Province of BC’s regional flood frequency guidelines work. Prior to joining NHC Faye worked in academia and for the Province of BC. She lives in Parksville with her husband and kids.

Piotr Kuraś, PEng, PE, RPF:

Piotr Kuraś is a principal at Northwest Hydraulic Consultants Ltd. (NHC).  For the Province of British Columbia’s Regional Flood Frequency Analysis project, Piotr was the consultant project lead and manager.  He has over 16 years of experience as a hydrologist in field monitoring, hydrologic modelling, statistical analysis, and watershed assessments with these subdisciplines complementing projects in water supply, hydropower, infrastructure design, and more recently floodplain mapping.
